World Info: Magic
Magic is common through Kainosis. Most families have some spark of ability and use simple incantations around the house, although pursuing an education in magic is up to the individual. Some schools of magic rely on apprenticeships, whereas others demand academic study. Regardless of which school of magic one pursues though, there is a great demand on remembering fine details and going through precise methods.
Incantation magic
Incantation magic, or base magic, is all the little spells that help folks get through the day. Say a few words and the lights go on, say something else and the bed will make itself. Spells are passed on through families for generations, as well as codified in largely published books that offer new ways to help out in the home. Learning incantation based magic is considered the easiest magic to learn, and it feeds into the other forms of magic. However, advancement in incantation magic as it’s own field is extremely rare.
Alchemy
Alchemy is considered a practical magic, with an emphasis on the transmutation of material into other shapes. For example, a pile of raw iron can be transmuted into a sculpture, depending on the skill of the alchemist in question. The act of transmutation itself relies on elaborate circles with precise instructions for the material that, when activated, will reshape what’s within in order to create a final product.
It isn’t uncommon for this magic to be used in manufacturing, architecture, construction, and a number of other areas. Are you involved in something? Alchemy can probably help - it’s an almost universal art.
Learning alchemy takes dedication to learning an awful lot of precise geometric patterns and how to deploy them, but it also ensures a steady paycheck. Depending, up and coming alchemists can take formalized courses in school or learn through an apprenticeship. The latter is still the most common.

Herbology
Herbology, like alchemy, is a practical magic, albeit one better suited for the countryside rather than the city. Herbalists specialize in the raising of plants with magical properties, processing them, and turning them into medicine for the populace. Some herbalists choose only to grow material, harvest it, and pass it onto apothecaries elsewhere to do the work of creating medicine, whereas other herbalists will grow and create their own recipes. Some recipes can be created in mere hours, whereas others can take weeks or even months to finish.
Herbalists also often supply processed material to alchemists, who use organic matter in their own work. The two types of magic feed off of each other and are considered the cornerstones of Kainosis’s civilization. Herbology also works very close with scientific research in the field of medicine, and it’s not uncommon for teams to be made of a mix of doctors and magi.
Becoming a herbalist relies heavily on apprenticeship, although a herbalist with potential can quickly gain mastery of the basics within a few months. Teaching herbology in a school setting is highly uncommon, although some rural locations include instruction on creating basic salves and other herbology cures as a form of first aid.

Summons
Summons magic is the highest level of magic, and now illegal in Kainosis. Considered the most dangerous form of magic, magi draw a pair of elaborate summons circles designed to summon a particular spirit, repeat long spells to entice the spirit into the physical world, and bend that spirit to their will. The magi will stand in one circle for protection, and the spirit will appear in the other. Once summoned, a spirit can use the full of their magic for anything including acting as personal assistants, building great structures in days, spying on others, or whatever else they are told. This enslavement caused an uprising of spirits in recent times, leading to it becoming illegal.
This type of magic is considered high-risk because a circle with even the slightest error in construction can and will allow a spirit to attack and destroy the mage who drew it. However, spirits have unlimited power, making the mage that controls them equally powerful.
Learning summons magic requires years of study - not only to learn the appropriate summons circles and spells, names of spirits, and ways to control spirits, but also to learn five dead languages that are usually employed in the spells that draw the spirit into the world. A decade is considered usual, although some truly dedicated magi manage mastery in seven years.
Magi that used to practice this form of magic are under close watch from the government at present, as any use of it could cause the formerly enslaved spirits to destroy the country.
