Premise
Thirty years ago, the country of Kainosis abolished the use of summons magic, a school of magic where one summoned spirits an enslaved them. While how the spirits organized remain unknown, it is an attested fact that a dozen of them began to rain down destruction on the capital city. It was at this time that the spirits revealed that this destruction was what happened to the once great Martellon Empire centuries before. Magi attempted to summon more spirits to fight back, the army defended the capital, and the population began to flee for the countryside. Other spirits, opposed to continued enslavement but realizing that destroying the Martellon Empire didn't free them for good, approached the Kainosis government in order to negotiate terms. With battle raging through the capital city of Myrikon, the government and spirits agreed to declare summons magic in Kainosis illegal, free all spirits still enslaved, destroy all texts that gave instruction in this branch of magic, and heavily prosecute any mage who attempted to summon a spirit from there on out.
The last thirty years have been one of uneasy peace, with magi still anticipating spirits attacking from their own realm, and others still unhappy that their property was destroyed and they themselves were put under intense scrutiny. But life continues on, ushering in a roaring period of technological advancement, entertainment, and discovery.
Kainosis is an open world musebox meant to emphasize world exploration and building character relationships in a location that takes the old glitz and architecture of the Byzantine empire, a healthy dose of magic, a dash of Italian city-states, and wraps it all up in the art deco style of the 1920s.
